Antonio Conte warned his Tottenham players they must fix their leaks if they are to keep their ambitions alive after conceding the first goal for the ninth successive game, in the draw at Brentford.

‘On one side I am happy,’ said Spurs boss Conte. ‘We have shown great character, desire and a fantastic reaction, and we believe in ourselves but, at the same time, it’s important to be stable.

‘For a team that wants to stay in a good position in the table, we have to make a good reflection and try to find the solution. For me this is the first time this has happened, to concede the first goal nine times in a row the first goal. This is not positive.’

Brentford were 2-0 up with goals by Vitaly Janelt and Ivan Toney, scoring for his 11th of the season in the Premier League in his first appearance since he was left out of the World Cup and hit with a swathe of FA charges for breaking gambling rules.

‘Obviously it was painful not getting picked in the squad, but that’s life,’ said Toney. ‘The more you dwell on it, the more it’s going to hurt you.’

Bees boss Thomas Frank added: ‘He has a natural inner drive to push himself and his teammates, to achieve more and score more. If I knew what it was then I would bottle it up and sell if for a lot of money and be very rich.

‘He is very special, with an unbelievable character and mentality, and ability to focus in the moment, and stay focused, and drive to win, and his performance was wow. Eleven goals in Premier League is very impressive.’

Spurs hit back through Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Conte praised Kane, who was jeered by Brentford fans.

‘The fans were scared of him, and tried to create a problem and disrupt him,’ said Conte. ‘But only because he was playing for Tottenham against their team, that’s normal.

‘I have zero doubt about his quality, about his mentality, about the way he approached every game and every training session. For sure, for Harry, he’s facing a strange situation because he played a really good World Cup, then he missed this penalty. It was a decisive penalty for England to drop England.

‘We are talking about a really, really good player and especially a good person. For this reason, our fans and also the fans of the other teams should every time clap him.’
