Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has admitted to ‘loving’ Cristiano Ronaldo and the ‘charming idea’ of seeing him at Dortmund, but he was keen to stress that ‘no contact’ had been with Manchester United.

Ronaldo has been hoping for a move away from Old Trafford for some weeks but has been turned down by a number of European clubs.

He is keen to play another season of Champions League football to secure his record as the tournament’s highest ever scorer.

Lionel Messi lurks just 15 goals behind him and is likely to play a big role in PSG’s European campaign this season.

In quotes carried By Fabrizio Romano, Watzke said: ‘I love Cristiano Ronaldo – it’s certainly a charming idea to see Cristiano play at Signal Iduna Park. But there is no contact at all between the parties involved.’

Ronaldo has failed to make an impact so far this season as United have lost both of their opening Premier League games.

Despite this, there are some who think he could be the man to turn things around at the club.

Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Gary Neville said: ‘[Ronaldo] wants to finish his career at a club that’s achieving great things.

‘But I do think he’s the only player in that dressing room that could lead them. He’s the only one with the in-built resilience and mental strength. The club is in crisis and it needs leaders to lead. He’s the only one who can grab this situation by the scruff of the neck!’
