Erik ten Hag was critical of his Manchester United side’s finishing despite their 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

The Red Devils leapfrogged Newcastle in the Premier League table thanks to goals from Antony and Diogo Dalot, but the manager wanted more from his players.

He told Sky Sports after the game: ‘[My] only criticism is the score has to be higher, 3-0 or 4-0.

‘We missed a couple of chances. We want to kill the game early so it is always important, with so many chances you have to score.’

United managed 22 shots in the game compared to Forest’s six, but just eight were on target as they failed to make their dominance count.

Part of the reason for this may have been Marcus Rashford’s absence through injury, but ten Hag insisted he was confident in back-up forward Anthony Martial.

‘He will score goal, ‘ he said of the Frenchman, ‘he is very capable, no doubt about that. But we need more goal scorers. I am happy with Antony, his start wasn’t good but after he came into the game and he was continually a threat. He is definitely making chances. I am happy for him that he scored.’

United’s progress this season means they could end up playing the maximum possible number of games.

Having already won the League Cup, they have also reached the latter stages of the Europa League and FA Cup and will play 65 games this season if they reach the finals of both competitions.

The Dutch manager was typically guarded about the rest of the season, as he continued: ‘We approach it game by game, what can we do? We are United, we have to win every game.

‘If you play so many games you can get setbacks, we make mistakes, we have bad luck, but you have to learn to concentrate and focus.

‘The points are getting more expensive because we are really battling. Teams are giving their lives against every opponent.’

The Red Devils will next be in action against Sevilla in the second leg of their Europa League clash after drawing the first game 2-2.
