Mr Pius Henwan has been appointed as the substantive Director of Sports for Plateau State Sports Council.

Mr Henwan who is the current General Manager of Plateau United FC, takes over from Mr Simon Moven, the outgoing Director of Sports who retired from the State Civil service on Tuesday, 15th May, 2023, after serving for 35 years.

The appointment of Mr Henwan was welcomed with great excitement as the Council has not had a substantive Director of Sports since 2007. The 4 previous Sports Directors who had served since then, had all retired under acting capacities.

In a brief ceremony to mark the handing over at the Director’s office, Mr Simon Moven thanked God and appreciated his Management and the entire staff of the Council for supporting him leading to a successful tenure. He charged the incoming Director to be ready to assume a difficult task of managing over five hundred staff and athletes. He added that he has no doubt in his capacity to deliver owing to his experience as the General Manager of Plateau United. He adviced Mr Henwan to carry his staff along and equally encouraged the Management and staff to give their support and cooperation to the new Director.

In his remarks, the incoming Director said it wasn’t an easy decision to accept this new challenge, he is however, encouraged because the Sports Council is his home. He promised to discharge his duties without favour or victimisation. He therefore warned that it is not going to be business as usual as he is here to work and to make the Sports Council a better place. He said he is ready to embrace those that are willing to work to move sports on the Plateau to the next level.

Earlier, in his reaction, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Plateau State, Hon Daniel Dung Dalyop, who stopped over to witness proceedings, expressed the need to secure the approval of Government for a substantive appointment for Mr Henwan in view of the limited nature of the acting capacity as experienced by those who had served as acting Directors.
Nontheless, this appointment is to afford the incoming Director the ability to perform well.

The Commissioner thanked the outgoing Director for his services to the state.

Goodwill messages were poured out from the Management and a few staff of both Sports Council and Plateau United Fc who attended the ceremony.

Mr Moven, untill his retirement, had served as Director of Sports for 5 years since 2018.
