Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that defender Sergio Reguilon has joined La Liga aside Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan from the club.

The Spanish full-back signed for Spurs in the summer of 2020 and has made 67 appearances for the club, scoring two goals.

He moves to the Metropolitano Stadium on loan for the 2022-23 season, however, according to Fabrizio Romano there is no obligation to purchase the player at the end of the deal.

The 25-year-old heads back to Spain to fill the left-back void left by Rena Lodi after he moved to Nottingham Forest as the Premier League new boys’ latest signing.

Reguilon had been left out of Antonio Conte’s first-team squad, with the manager keen to offload the Spanish international before this week’s transfer deadline.

There was some interest from Lazio and also a possibility to stay in the Premier League with Fulham, but the former Real Madrid and Sevilla player was open to a return to Spain.

Conte has already seen a loan deal for Tanguy Ndombele to Napoli and Giovani Lo Celso’s loan back to Villarreal, while Harry Winks is on the verge on joining Sampdoria on another season-long loan from North London.

It marks an overhaul of the Italian’s squad this summer where Spurs have recruited Ivan Perisic, Richarilson, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Djed Spence and Clement Lenglet.

They have also confirmed the permanent signing of defender Cristian Romero from Atalanta, signing a contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until 2027.
