Tyrell Malacia has taken his big summer move to Manchester United in his stride so far. The Dutch defender became the first signing of the Erik ten Hag era when United snapped him up from Feyenoord.

The 23-year-old has impressed too, on the left side of a new-look defence that also includes Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Diogo Dalot. When quizzed on his reasoning behind making the move to Old Trafford, Malacia said conversations with Ten Hag – whose Ajax side he regularly came up against in the Eredivisie – swung it.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “I knew him because I played against him in Holland. Actually before I came here, I spoke with him on the phone and had some good talks with him. It felt good for me. You see what he wants.

“I think his vision is quite clear. Now, as both individuals and as a team, we have to develop that. It was a big decision to make so to know the club and the manager both want me, that was important for me.”

Malacia was also asked which players he modelled his game on as a youngster – and he lists a former United full-back as being his favourite.

He added: “I always looked towards players with the same style as me, so obviously it was (Patrice) Evra for me. I really loved to watch him.”
