Xavi admits he faces the SACK if he can’t turn the tide after £131m of spending

Barcelona manager Xavi claims he will be axed and replaced by a new coach if their expensive summer business doesn’t bring trophies this season.

Xavi was afforded almost £150million worth of new signings by Barca’s hierarchy in the summer; with the arrival of Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Raphinha, Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie dramatically lifting expectations at the club.

Yet so far this season the Catalans have failed to live up to the hype, losing two of their first four Champions League games to leave themselves on the brink of a group-stage exit while also suffering defeat in Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid.

The pressure is mounting on Xavi to get his new-look squad competing for silverware, and the legendary former Barca midfielder admits his head is on the chopping block.

‘With the effort made by the club and the squad we have, we have to compete for trophies,’ he said at his press conference ahead of Thursday’s clash with Villarreal.

‘And if we don’t win, as the president said, there will be consequences, starting with me.

‘If we don’t win, another coach will come in. But I am going to give everything so that this works.’

Despite the current question marks surrounding them, Xavi’s side are still only three points behind LaLiga leaders Real and a title triumph is therefore well within reach this term.

Their hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout stages are a lot slimmer, nevertheless. If Inter get the better of Viktoria Plzen at 5:45pm next Wednesday, by the time Barca line up against Bayern Munich at 8pm they will already be out of the competition.

‘The team’s situation is what it is,’ Xavi said. ‘We started like a shot and now we’re not so good.

‘This doesn’t stop me. We have to go step by step. We are three points behind the [LaLiga] leader and we have to continue.

‘This is too long and we can’t stop. The road from success to defeat is so small.’
